If you've heard anything about hiking in Steamboat, you've more than likely heard about Fish Creek Falls. And for good reason! With the trailhead located about 4 miles and an 11 minute drive from the Mariposa Lodge, it’s a no brainer to visit this iconic hiking spot while visiting Steamboat. There are many ways to enjoy Fish Creek Falls with several options for all levels of hikers. Read on to see which one suits your hiking fancy!
FISH CREEK FALLS OVERLOOK
A paved ¼ mile (one-way) trail leads you to the Fish Creek Falls Overlook. This paved trail is a great way to stretch your legs without committing to an hour+ long hike. Similarly, if you are having trouble adjusting to the elevation but want to be outside while soaking up all the beauty that Fish Creek Falls has to offer, we think this gentle option is best for you!
BASE OF FISH CREEK FALLS
Another way to get your steps in is to enjoy the ¼ mile (one-way) moderate hike down to the base of Fish Creek Falls. Here, you will see the iconic waterfall and the Fish Creek Falls bridge is often featured in photos. If you are in the mood for a picnic, feel free to pack some goodies + a blanket and enjoy your grub sitting on a rock alongside the falls.
UPPER FALLS AT FISH CREEK FALLS
Our favorite way to experience Fish Creek Falls is the 2.25 mile (one-way) hike to the Upper Falls at Fish Creek Falls. Now, don’t let that seemingly low mileage fool you as it is a steady uphill climb to the upper falls while being challenging and advanced in spots. Weaving your way through aspen groves will (thankfully!) provide some very necessary shade. You can expect about an hour and a half hike one-way to the second falls. Once you near the top, be sure to pause and take in the abundant views and the vantage point overlooking the city of Steamboat.
THINGS TO NOTE:
- There is a $5 parking fee of cash or check to park at the trailhead.
- We strongly recommend going as early as your schedule allows as this is a very popular hike and later in the day means bigger crowds!
- Don’t forget to pack lots of sunscreen, even more water, some snacks and your camera to take some iconic shots of the Fish Creek Falls experience!
